As companies push to develop more efficient models of training, they are increasingly turning to gamified processes that reward and challenge employees in new and exciting ways. What exactly is gamification, and how has it revolutionized employee training programs?

Gamification of employee training involves applying principles from game elements to the business training process, often by enticing employees with a progressive rewards system. As employees complete certain stages of their training, they’re enticed to continue through rewards and honorifics, and use their new training to accomplish the next task ahead of them.

The perks of gamifying employee training are far reaching; gamification helps employees build important foundational skill sets which are necessary for them to solve more complex task and complete more vigorous training in the future. By gamifying training early, a company sets itself down the path toward continuous future development.

Develop a progressive system

A successful gamification of your training system must include making it a progressive system; employees are rewarded and endowed with new skills when completing one section of training, and said skills are then used to complete the next section. Employees that follow the stepping stones of the training system should be advancing as they go along, and utilizing their newfound talents to tackle increasingly challenging objectives.

One of the reasons a gamified employee training system is so effective is its impact on employee engagement; workers who are rewarded for their hard work and exemplified for overachieving are more likely to value training than those who are trained outside of a gamified system. A progressive system allows employees to see the progress they’ve made thus far, and inspires them to finish strong.

Employees instructed through a gamified system don’t view training as a laborious drill, but rather as an enjoyable mental workout which challenges and rewards them.

Gamification doesn’t just deliver proven results, but fosters company loyalty and appreciation in workers who enjoy its perks. A formerly mundane training session is now viewed as the exciting next step in a progressive system which offers ever-more challenging hurdles and ever-greater rewards.

Set clear guidelines

Successful gamification requires clear guidelines. Employees must be explicitly told what their objectives are, and instructed on how to use the tools available to them to achieve said objectives.

Videogames and board games, upon which gamification draws heavily, are exemplary in explaining this. Before players can expect to “pass Go” and collect their money, they must have an understanding of how the game’s dice rolling and money mechanics work.…

For several years now, the common prevailing wisdom, backed by ample studies, is that breastfeeding is best for children. The practice claimed to have all sorts of benefits, including increasing your child’s IQ by a few points compared to non-breastfed children. However, recent studies have found the correlation between breastfeeding and intelligence has been overstated.

A study conducted on 8000 children in Ireland found that over time, there was little statistical difference in the cognitive abilities of children who were breastfed versus children who were not breastfed. Although there was a slight measurable increase among breastfed children, the results were too insignificant to suggest breastfeeding will make a child smarter.

“We weren’t able to find a direct causal link between breast-feeding and children’s cognitive outcomes,” said Lisa Christine-Gerard, author of the study and a child development researcher at University College Dublin. Girard pointed out that the study attempted to account for all other factors.

She explained that statistics and the study found that mothers who breast-fed their children were also more likely to do a number of activities that could positively influence the cognitive development of their children, such as smoking less, reading more and having a higher level of education. These factors, Girard said, likely contributed to the small statistical difference that did exist between breast-fed and bottle-fed babies.

However, the study did find a measurable difference in hyperactivity between children who were breastfed and children who were not which could not be accounted for by factoring in other socioeconomic and medical factors. Children who were breast-fed had a minor but statistically significant improvement in hyperactive behavior. However, by the age of 5, the difference was gone, making even that factor a possible statistical accident.

This study contradicts earlier studies that repeatedly found a correlation between IQ and breastfeeding, but it is also the first that attempted to remove as many extraneous factors as possible – the study was conducted by pairing up two children who shared all the same socioeconomic traits and backgrounds, except that one was breastfed and one was not. This matching was conducted on all 8000 children, the most extensive attempt to rule out socioeconomic factors’ influence.

Neverthless, Girard and other researchers involved in the study say, breastfeeding still has a number of other well documented health benefits for children and is still the preferred method of feeding them. Recommendations currently suggest parents breastfeed their children for six months exclusively, then continue to breastfeed for another six months as their children are introduced to solid foods.…

Most of you know that nothing stays still, least of all in design. When I was at college, Swiss design was all the range. As I got older, the US developed it own aesthetic. Now its ll about marrying graphic design with web development and design for tablet and new media.

This state of affairs has been going on since the beginning of time when man first began decorating things, and there’s no reason to believe any of this will change any time soon. Now, let’s just imagine all that design aesthetic you had learned in college was still relevant today. How boring would that be? Now imagine that you had to constantly relearn fashions and trends and try to keep up with the times. That sound’s so awesome, it’s exactly the kind of career I want to have.

This is because as designs get copied, you begin to see them everywhere, and that gets boring fast. The customer becomes used to it and your clients need to stand out from the crowd. Copying what everyone else is doing is certainly not the way. There’s a much better way, and that is to be original and innovate. Indeed, creativity and originality are the backbone of fashion trends, as ironic as that sounds, things can’t change and move without it.

This is doubly so in design where originality is often the brief you get from the client. So how can you keep ahead of industry trends? Well, that’s the tricky part, which is why you need to make sure your skills are sharp and you are fully tuned into the design world around you. That requires a lot of effort, but effort that becomes very worth it when you realize that, ultimately, it’s hard work that pushes trends.…
